Doubtless, everyone has heard of the casting for the Avatar movie. I wasn't going to make a post on it, since so many others have managed much better ones than I could have, but I realized I could link to those posts and spread awareness! So here.
Get the skinny! The sad, white, skinny.

Sokka is not pleased.
Almost as facepalmy as the casting decision in the first place, are, the as always, wonderful Internet arguments. My favorite is "Kids want to see white people!" Yeah. I mean, otherwise, how would so many kids watch Avatar, that super well done cartoon starring ASIAN AND INUIT PEOPLE?
Oh, but they're not Asian! Because, um, Aang and Toph have round eyes!
Yeah, Asian people, all their eyes look the same! I mean Aang? Such a totally WHITE nomadic monk with such a WHITE name! Bei Fong is also clearly meant to be a caucasion last name.
And Aang and Toph aren't even the ones we're complaining about in the first place! We're complaining about Katara and Sokka and Zuko being cast as white people! Look, that pic above is of Katara and Sokka. Tell me they are meant to be white. And Zuko is pretty clearly Asian.
But they're FICTIONAL RACES!
Thaaaat are clearly patterned after Asian and Inuit people. In fact, on my Avatar First Season DVD they have an explicit quote from the creators "So we later made Katara's little hair loopies to resemble an actual Inuit hairstyle!" It almost makes you think Katara is meant to be sort of INUIT, right? OMG!
Honestly, those people claiming we are far too outraged because "sometimes black people are cast as white people!" are like those "it's reverse discrimination" idiots. "OMG they have an African American club in the school REVERSE DISCRIMINATION!" I want to smack those people. Reverse discrimation is an oxymoron. The reverse of discrimination is...non-discrimination. That should tell you something. African Americans get to have their own club because whites have been opressing them for years. We are the opressors, so, yes, we ARE racist if we get out own clubs and bar other races. We have a lot more making right to do before WE can have the gall to bitch about being discriminated against. The entire white washing of a wonderfully diverse show is not the same as "Black dude as Kingpin".
Wow, despite linking to better arguments, I ended up arguing just because I felt like it. Oh well.
I'd advise you, like
glockgal did, to write letters. It's time Hollywood learned to stop being such a racist pool of suck. White is not the default. I wasn't planning on seeing the Avatar movie anyway, considering the incredible amount of acting ability and special effects and CGI needed to capture the magic of the show, I saw no way they could pull it off. But with the current casting, I'm DEFINITELY not going to see it.
It should be noted it's not a good time to be a female and non-white character at DC either, between Vixen's whitewashing and speaking "African" (at least her mini is good and she's drawn black there. *sigh*), Thunder's coma and of course, poor, poor Cass.
Apparently things aren't going too well at Marvel either, according to
scottyquick .
Those of you who said racism would end now Obama's president elect...
well, you were idiots, but that goes without saying. (Unless you were Stephen Colbert, but he was joking)

(I really need to get around to watching Avatar. It sounds awesome.)
As someone who loathed Black Kingpin, I'd be a fairly massive hypocrite if I didn't hate this too. And I do. It's a simple rationale here, people. Read the comic/watch the show. These characters = not white. Kingpin = white.
I hate when Hollywood starts thinking they're clever. Every single trailer before The Day the Earth Stood Still was either a sequel, a remake, or an adaptation. Want to tell me how clever you are again, Hollywood?
But they're FICTIONAL RACES!
Thell that to Whedon's fans on Serenity
I don't get into these arguements because they'd never stop. Granted there have been small steps of improvement but it's still a long way off. Obama's winning the election showed that somewhat.
But into Avatar, not so much.

I'm thinking that they plan to hire some relatively big-name East Asian actor to play Uncle Iroh and call it a day for "diversity."
But what we really need is for the director's daughter to look at the casting and go, "But, Daddy, she doesn't look a thing like Katara!" (See: the Evil Overlord List item about having a small child check your plans for obvious flaws.)
Oh, that's so cynical of you.
I'm sure they'll allow some Asian actors to audition for villain roles too.
It doesn't help that Grace and Thunder were 50% of DC's LGBT couples. Seriously, I've spent the past 30 minutes searching for queer couples at DC, and the only two I've found are Damon/Matt and Grace/Thunder. And seeing as how Manhunter is canceled ...
(Ignore their current forced separation due to, IDK, Ragnarok or something.)
So.... Yeah, this isn't surprising....
But seriously, people are arguing those points? Those are the dumbest points I've ever seen!
Part of why I loved the Avatar was because you had so many different leads aside from straight white guy (even though that's a bit weird, considering how young Aang is). Katara and Sokka especially were my two favourites, with strong, developing storylines, and Toph was my top favourite by far. It's going to be horrible if they get this casting through.
So yeah, I'm going to see about writing to them to let them know that this is all messed up.
Man, if they did go through with this and had everyone just really tanned... *shakes head*
